Moving to Texas

Moving to a new location can be difficult. So, I've put together some information that I hope will help with the transition.

Education

To enroll in Seguin ISD and other schools in Texas, a student must have the following:

  • Prior grades
  • Birth certificate
  • Social Security Number
  • A verified living address in a school's area
  • (Immunization requirements)
  • (Dress code requirements)
  • (School information)

Driver License Change

Driver licenses are handled through the Texas Department of Public Safety, commonly referred to as DPS. There are DPS offices in Seguin, New Braunfels, and San Marcos.

The Seguin driver license bureau is located at 1440 E. Kingsbury.

The process of obtaining a license is as follows:

  • Provide proof of identity, Social Security Number, Texas vehicle registration, proof of insurance
  • Pay fees
  • Take vision test

Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registration and titles are now handled through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles as of November 1, 2009. This was formerly handled through the Texas Department of Transportation in cooperation with the local county tax offices.

Within about 30 days, take car to an approved inspection station located at most car dealers and many repair shops. (Randy's service station on Court Street does an excellent job.) Ask for an inspection and tell them it is for the "Texas Vehicle Registration." The inspector will provide a VI-30 form showing completed inspection. This form should then be taken to the Guadalupe Appraisal office at 307 W. Court Street. (Make sure that the VIN number on the VI-30 form and your vehicle title are the same.) You will need the VI-30 inspection form, the vehicle title, and proof of insurance to register your vehicle.

Sales Tax

Texas has state and local sales taxes. The local sales tax is generally 8.25%; although, it does vary in some parts of the state. For instance, San Antonio sales tax is 8.125%. State sales tax is currently 6.25%. The remainder of the local sales tax is collected for county, city, and local institutions.
